And so it begins....This is phase one of my milling machine restoration project, here I give it an initial stripdown prior to a good cleaning.
DoreWestbury Mill. I have recently acquired a MK1, which seems to be in fairly good condition, just needing rewire with NVR + Estop and general clean, oil and grease. I thought that while dismantled, I would measure certain parts and weigh all, as I recall someone recently querying how heavy.

I built my Dore Westbury mill from a kit of parts in the early eighties, the largest cutter that i used was a 3/4 inch end mill. In ordinary mild steel it would cut at least 1/16 inch deep and more on occasions .I still have it although it is now a cnc machine. The head lives on with an Axminster table and is still a useful

above is a photo of the unmachined westbury head and tee can be used to make up the missing parts for my "headless dw mill". i`ve realised that this head casting can be adapted to the same specification as the dore westbury mk2 head, which will enable westbury owners to update their machines to the later specification.
The chuck wasn't actually that old either, maybe three years or so, but It uses a drawbar thread of 3/8 inch Whitworth which of course suited the Dore Westbury mill very well indeed. The chuck is hardened throughout which effectively ruled out the possibility of lightly chasing the mm thread for the closing nut.

I have been restoring to working order an old Westbury (not Dore Westbury) milling machine. By the standards of the mills mentioned here this is probably so small that it would get lost in the workshop! The design of the cone nuts and micrometer dials has confused me. Each feedscrew beyond the thrust washer is threaded 7/16x26tpi and the very ...
'Dore' is Arnold Throp and he was/is a part of Model Engineer Services of Sheffield. Ivan Law and the Quorn/ Dore Westbury/Kennet et al. The next clue is that Throp is/was a member of the SMEE. I nattered with him on the stand at Harrogate a couple of years ago. Hope this helps( and unless someone can do better they can belt up)

Hi frank, thanks for stopping by. Yeh, the Dore Westbury is indeed a unique mill, not least as it was originally sold in kit form, which comprised a set of plans, a book containing all the machining procedures and notes, a set of partly machined castings and all the materials to make the various levers and such.
